Background of the Study

Neonatal resuscitation is a critical intervention aimed at preventing neonatal death and morbidity. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that approximately 1 million newborns die every year due to birth asphyxia, a condition that could often be prevented with timely and effective resuscitation (WHO, 2024). Neonatal resuscitation involves various life-saving interventions, including the use of oxygen, chest compressions, and medications, all of which require specialized skills and knowledge. Nurses, who play a central role in the neonatal care team, are essential to the success of resuscitation efforts and ensuring that neonates receive prompt and appropriate care.

Adherence to established guidelines for neonatal resuscitation, such as those provided by the American Heart Association (AHA) and WHO, is crucial in reducing the risk of mortality and morbidity in newborns. These guidelines outline protocols for resuscitation, including steps to assess the neonate’s airway, breathing, circulation, and other critical factors. Nurses’ knowledge of and adherence to these guidelines can significantly impact neonatal outcomes. However, several studies suggest that there is a gap in the adherence to neonatal resuscitation guidelines, often due to inadequate training, limited resources, and inconsistent practices among healthcare providers (Okonkwo et al., 2023).

Ogun State University Teaching Hospital is one of the prominent healthcare institutions in Ogun State, where neonatal care is provided. However, the level of adherence to standard neonatal resuscitation guidelines by nurses at the hospital remains unclear. This study aims to evaluate the adherence of nurses to neonatal resuscitation guidelines, identifying any factors that may hinder optimal practice and suggesting ways to improve care for neonates.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the availability of standard neonatal resuscitation guidelines, there are concerns about the adherence of nurses to these guidelines in Ogun State University Teaching Hospital. Non-adherence to established protocols can result in delays in resuscitation, inappropriate interventions, and poor outcomes for neonates. Understanding the factors that contribute to non-compliance and evaluating the current level of adherence is essential for improving neonatal care in the hospital. This study seeks to assess nurses' adherence to neonatal resuscitation guidelines at Ogun State University Teaching Hospital and identify potential barriers to effective implementation.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the level of adherence of nurses at Ogun State University Teaching Hospital to neonatal resuscitation guidelines.
  2. To identify the factors that influence nurses' adherence to neonatal resuscitation protocols at Ogun State University Teaching Hospital.
  3. To propose recommendations for improving adherence to neonatal resuscitation guidelines in the hospital.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of adherence of nurses at Ogun State University Teaching Hospital to neonatal resuscitation guidelines?
  2. What factors influence nurses' adherence to neonatal resuscitation guidelines at Ogun State University Teaching Hospital?
  3. What strategies can be implemented to improve adherence to neonatal resuscitation guidelines at Ogun State University Teaching Hospital?

Research Hypotheses

  1. There is a significant relationship between nurses' adherence to neonatal resuscitation guidelines and the quality of care provided to neonates at Ogun State University Teaching Hospital.
  2. Nurses who receive regular training on neonatal resuscitation are more likely to adhere to established guidelines than those who do not.
  3. Barriers such as inadequate resources and lack of support are significantly related to non-adherence to neonatal resuscitation guidelines among nurses.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on nurses working in the neonatal and pediatric units of Ogun State University Teaching Hospital. It will assess their adherence to neonatal resuscitation guidelines and the factors that may influence their practice. The study will not include nurses working in other departments or hospitals, limiting the generalizability of the findings.

The limitations of the study include potential biases in self-reported data and the challenge of measuring adherence in a real-time clinical setting. Additionally, the study will focus solely on neonatal resuscitation and will not address other aspects of neonatal care.

Definitions of Terms

  • Neonatal resuscitation: Life-saving interventions provided to newborns who are not breathing or have inadequate circulation immediately after birth.
  • Adherence: The extent to which nurses follow established guidelines and protocols in neonatal resuscitation.
  • Neonatal outcomes: The health results observed in neonates following birth, particularly in relation to survival and early health interventions.
